character.
CHARACTER NAME: Shino Asada; she will probably go by her Internet handle, Shinon
SERIES: Sword Art Online
CANON POINT: Post-volume 6
APPEARANCE: Her avatar! She describes it (rather unhappily) as small and delicate, to the point that it resembles a doll. She is quite slender with pale blue hair cut to about her shoulder at its longest, with various hair decorations that are (in true JRPG fashion design) just there to look nice rather than do anything useful in keeping her hair out of her catlike blue eyes. It should also be noted that this appearance changes her voice to something similar to the norm, but still different enough that it annoys her: a voice high, clear, and cute-sounding as it were.
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Steam Gunner; Shinon is first introduced as a player on the MMORPG Gun Gale Online, and has made a name for herself as an excellent sniper there.
PERSONALITY: Shino Asada’s goal in life is to be strong.
This has been her goal since a young age. As her mother was deeply affected by the death of her father, she grew up wanting only to protect her remaining family member. She would go through great lengths to keep her safe, and eventually turns a would-be bank robber’s gun on him when he dares to threaten the woman. This happened at the tender age of eleven.
However, the action backfired. After murdering the man to protect her mother, Shino found herself with a crippling phobia of guns. It did not help that no one in the community was supportive of her after this; her classmates called her a murderer, and her teachers shunned her. Suddenly, her life became isolated and miserable.
Thankfully, Shino is not the type to give up. She began attempts to fix her phobia, starting with magazines about guns and eventually working her way up to playing an online virtual reality MMO called Gun Gale Online to help her get used to the weapons. She transferred to a new school to escape the bullying and, when it followed her there, she refused to put up with it. After all, her phobia did not stop her from wanting to be strong, and how could a person possibly be strong when the mere reference to a gun would cause her to break down both mentally and physically? No one. Her determination shines through her actions, and even her phobia has diminished because of it. She is still uncomfortable holding model guns in real life, but she can deal with them more or less fine in virtual reality provided they are not the Black Star model of pistol.
She has a remarkable will to continue surviving, whether it is in a game or in reality. In games, she will keep fighting her opponent even if they are a tank build and she a fragile sniper. In real life, she has the guts to beat down her phobia and bluff a potential murderer with the model gun she so fears. She shows remarkable clarity of thought while under pressure, strategizing methods for survival not only for herself, but any allies she may have who are also involved. It is no exaggeration to say that she is still alive because of this skill. This directly relates to her in-game notion of fighting until the end. She chastises other players for even suggesting she ditch the battle to save herself, and believes strongly in going down with one's guns blazing. Making it to the top is just one more indicator of strength, so naturally she needs to be able to fight each enemy with everything she's got.
She tends to be withdrawn, not because she dislikes making friends, but because her trust has been betrayed nearly every time; and rightly so, since she is a murderer. Thankfully, due to Kirito’s friends, she’s a little more willing to try trusting again – at least, for now. And as much as she would like to have friends, she is not the type to approach anyone by her own merit, so it falls to others to come to her instead. She is wary, particularly of men, but will generally be receptive if an offer of friendship is given. Even when it comes to males, it is not out of any special hatred; she is just cautious due to having been hit on quite a bit while walking around a male-dominated game with an avatar like hers.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE: [There is yet another new and confused face wandering around Mac Anu today. This time, it is a petite Steam Gunner. Currently her attention is split multiple ways; sometimes she is checking her Relic with a look of frustration, others she is looking intently at her surroundings as if it may clue her in on some big secret. And on some occasions, she will stare directly at your character, almost expectantly. At any rate, it is clear she will not be the first to approach, so that will be up to the other to initiate.
However… once approached, she is quick to fire off a question before any pleasantries can so much as begin.]
Where is this place? It isn’t GGO… But it can’t be SAO, either.
…Is it?
[Her voice is calm with only a slight tinge of suppressed fear. Whatever it is she’s saying, it must be some cause for concern. Why else would someone work so hard to control the tremors in their voice?]
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:”Whew…” Shinon gave a quiet sigh of relief as she made her way to the beast statue. It had been a long journey through each individual islet on the field, gradually wiping out each group of monsters as she collected the pieces needed to open the temple. But here she was, standing before the beast statue on her own two feet.
She stepped lightly up to the altar, kicking the treasure chest open. Out popped an item: the Blade Fern.
“…A sword?” She couldn’t help but allow her shoulders to sag. All of that work for a weapon she couldn’t even use! She could always sell it of course, but she couldn’t help wishing she would eventually stumble upon a rare weapon she could wield herself. Not necessarily something as big and powerful as the Hecate II she had obtained in GGO – just a weapon she could be proud to have found by her own strength rather than by the weight of her money pouch.
Her strength spent from solo-ing the field, she sank to the ground wearily. All that work for just a sword, she thought dejectedly.
“Haa… If I knew someone, it might make a good gift…” Her thoughts wandered to a certain swordsman she once knew, but she quickly shook the thought from her mind. Even if he showed up in The World, there wasn’t a guarantee he would be a Blade Brandier. Not only that, but the mere idea of dragging someone like that into a sealed off VRMMORPG depressed her. It wouldn’t be fair in the slightest for someone who had worked so hard to escape a locked game to find themselves returned to a similar scenario.
“…He’d probably try to find the way out,” she muttered to herself. “And once he did, he would make sure everyone could exit safely.” She shook her head. No. That man did not need this burden.
Her short rest done, she climbed to her feet once more. Now that the treasure had been collected, there wasn’t any point to sticking around. She began trudging her way back up to ground level, taking it at a leisurely pace.
One day, she would find her way out. And until then, she planned to keep on fighting, slowly gathering her strength…
